International Literacy Day - September 8, 2021!

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed September 8 as Literacy Day in Saskatchewan. The day provides an opportunity for communities, libraries, schools and other organizations to plan activities that raise awareness about the importance of literacy. We know that literacy and learning are key to a strong Saskatchewan, including opening doors to employment, better social and health outcomes and active participation in society. The proclamation for this day was requested by the Saskatchewan Literacy Network.   

Since it was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1966, the world has celebrated International Literacy Day on September 8.

The 2021 theme is "Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide".
