Laura's Bio...

Laura Gillis is a student at the Yorkton Regional High School and a Co-Chair for the 2020 Canadian Student Leadership Conference. Her family, her small dog, her wonderful friends, and her love of horses keep her grounded. She has roots in the arena and on the stage, as she has been acting with Free My Muse for eight years, and has been riding ever since she was allowed to leave the hospital after she was born. A quote that grounds her is, “When you get where you’re going, don’t forget, turn back around. Help the next one in line, always stay humble and kind,” from Tim McGraw’s song, Humble and Kind. Laura is nourished by libraries, a good song and her teachers who come in all shapes and forms, and guide her as she grows and develops. She has grown from the shy girl who didn’t quite know where she belonged, to the girl who knows that you can make your own place for yourself, even in the most daunting and unfamiliar situations. A quote that nourishes her is, “If you’re going through Hell, keep going,” which appears in many works, but was first read by Laura in Jandy Nelson’s novel, I’ll Give You the Sun. Laura blossoms at acting, academics, playing her clarinet, riding, writing and public speaking. Laura has reaped the rewards she has sewn by becoming a drama teacher at Free My Muse, allowing her to watch every child that walks into the studio fall in love with drama, just like she did eight years ago. She also applied for a position as a spirit leader, and then a co-chair, for the 2020 conference, and feels that taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity is a great way to reap the rewards she has sewn. She hopes to make the 2020 conference a wonderful, inspiring experience for all who participate, and can’t wait to see you all there!
